Period
2005

The KfW bank invested in the construction of the Chasma Right Bank Irrigation (CRBI) project in Pakistan and wished to monitor the progress of land reclamation and agricultural development. The KfW was particularly interested in how canal water was conveyed to crops and how this development has evolved from 1999 to 2002. Satellite imagery allows for monitoring of agricultural developments in the project area over a number of years. Maps of cropping intensity, irrigation intensity and water logging intensity were used to evaluate the agricultural developments.

In order to cope with a growing world population and less water resources available for agriculture, water needs to be managed more efficiently. Water productivity is an accurate indicator of agricultural productivity in relation to the crop's consumptive use of water. Although agricultural census data for Pakistan provides crop production statistics, they do not include information on crop water consumption. A SEBAL analysis provided this missing information on crop water consumption.
