The Urmia basin in Northwestern Iran is a classic closed drainage basin where all water drains to the central Lake Uromiyeh. Growing pressure on the natural resources of the lake, due to agricultural intensification and water resources development, resulted in a significant drop of the waterlevel of the ecologically important lake. Based on remote sensing and SEBAL the water balance for two hydrological years was assessed in order to better understand the hydrology of the basin.
