Water accounting in the Okavango River basin

Location
Okavango River Basin (Angola, Botswana, Namibia)
Contractor
Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO)
Period
2010

The FAO Land and Water Division is currently executing the project “Coping with Water Scarcity - the Role of Agriculture”, which includes the development of a general methodology for a Water Audit to be applied on country or river basin level in Africa. Three pilot locations were selected to test the constructed guidelines, including the Okavango River basin. WaterWatch has produced high resolution spatial information on water consumption and biomass production in the basin, and translated this into an overview of water resources use and availability based on the Water Accounting Plus framework developed in-house.
