Start of irrigation and crop monitoring in the Garonne, France

WaterWatch currently monitors the soil water balance and energy balance of 50 selected fields in the catchment of the Garonne in Southwest France for the period June-September 2010. The objective of the study is to demonstrate that the combination of (i) soil moisture measurements in the field with (ii) evapotranspiration measurements from remote sensing provides an excellent input dataset for an analytical irrigation monitoring and scheduling tool.

The IrriLook tool of WaterWatch is developed for this purpose, and the model performance will be evaluated during a workshop at the end of the growing season. The client of this project is the Association Climatologique de la Moyenne-Garonne et du Sud-Quest (ACMG).
