Gijs (1986) graduated with a MSc degree in Hydrology from Utrecht University in 2009. He already obtained a BSc degree in Physical Geography from the same university. Gijs is interested in both groundwater and surface water hydrology, and the use of remote sensing and GIS techniques for more efficient and sustainable water resource management. For his MSc graduation project at the Department of the Earth Sciences at SUNY Brockport (US), he built a rainfall-runoff model for an area in the state of New York that experiences regular flooding. The project included fieldwork to collect the necessary hydrological data. Gijs was also involved in groundwater management projects, including an assessment of the presence of pesticides  in the groundwater near drinking water extraction points in the province of Limburg (MSc practical work) and several exploratory hydrological and juridical studies of the possibilities of applying groundwater energy storage (at IF technology).
